Darken Hair Color Using Natural Home Remedies without Using Dyes

People began changing their hair color long before chemical dyes were invented, to lighten or darken their hair to achieve just about any hair color tint they wanted.

Many people do not like putting chemicals on their head and hair as it can damage the hair and leave your hair dry, lifeless and frizzy.

The good news is that there are many gentle ways of darkening your hair color using natural home remedies and simple ingredients. The best way for naturally lightening your hair color is the simple combination of a lemon juice rinse and sunshine.

However, too much time in the sun may lighten your hair more than you like.

There are various excellent ways to darken your hair using natural ingredients that are all inexpensive and reversible.

Natural hair darkening remedies are gentle and so the damage done to your hair is minimal in comparison to using harsh chemical dyes, that are also more permanent.

Everyone's hair is different and so you may need to dry some of the methods listed below to discover the one that is just right for you.

Henna Natural Dye

Henna is a semi-permanent and all-natural hair treatment that can have varying results and so it pays to do a test on a small piece of your hair first. There are lots of product variations and so it pays to get some reliable information.

Hanna can be combined with other ingredients to get various colors. The plant, henna, Lawsonia inermis, contains only one dye molecule which is red-orange. The actual color or hair treated with henna varies with your natural hair colors.

Various dyes and natural products are added to henna to make other colors other than red.

For example, the natural dye Indigo can be combined with a henna to produce deep rich reds and brown shades right through to a rich black color, with the henna adding richness, texture and shine.

To use henna on your hair, mix the powder with citrus juice in a plastic container until it has the consistency of yogurt. Let the mixture sit overnight at room temperature and use it the next day.

Apply the henna thickly to your dry hair and leave it on for at least two hours, depending on the intensity of color you want for your hair. Then thoroughly wash your hair and apply a conditioner.

Using Coffee to Darken Hair

This is pretty simple - the coffee stains your hair and makes it a darker color. For a deeper color change you may have to repeat the process several times. The best results are for changes to light and medium shades of brown.

Brew some strong coffee (darker blends are best) and let it cool down. Poor the coffee into a bowl. In the shower wash your hair normally and use the coffee as a rinse passed through your hair several times.

Rinse with water and then wash your hair again, rinse and apply a conditioner. Towel dry your hair.

Using Carrot and Beet Juice to Darken your Hair

A good alternative to henna for red and brown darkening is to use a combination of 1/2 cup beet juice and 1/2 cup of carrot juices. Simply pour the mixture over your damp hair and leave it on for about 30 minutes before rinsing. Repeat for a stronger color, and repeat the process once a week to maintain the color.

Using Black Tea to Darken Hair Color

Black tea also has a staining effect on your hair and is a great way to darken your hair a little, though the color tends to fade quickly and the process may need to be repeated once or twice a week.

To color your hair with tea, brew a very strong pot of black tea and let it cool down. Transfer it to a bowl and rinse the tea through your hair several times. Then leave the last rinse on your hair for 10-15 minutes before rinsing out completely. Then wash and condition your hair, and towel dry.

Using Cocoa to Darken Your Hair

Mix the cocoa powder with water to form a thick paste, rub it into you hair, cover with shower cap and leave it on for 10-20 minutes. The longer you leave it on the darker the color will be. Wash your hair normally and apply a conditioner. You can also fill a half empty bottle of shampoo with cocoa and use it for washing your hair.

Vinegar and Soy Sauce Rinse

You can use a mixture of soy sauce and vinegar (half a cup of each) to darken hair without dye. Simply use the mixture as a final rinse after shampooing. The odor fades quickly as the hair dries.

Using Rosemary to Darken Your Hair

Try rosemary to tone your scalp as well as darkening your hair. Add three teaspoons of dry rosemary leaves or 1/4 cup of fresh rosemary leaves to 1 cup boiling water. Let the infusion steep until cool and then pass through a sieve.

After shampooing add the tea to your hair and massage it well into your scalp. Leave it on your hair for around 5 minutes, then rinse it out. Rosemary has a fairly weak dying effect and can be combined with sage and other treatments.

Using Black Walnuts for Darkening Hair

Using black walnuts works very well to darken your hair color. Crack the walnuts and place the nuts into a pot of water and boil for a few minutes. Reduce the heat wait for the liquid to cool and then strain.

Apply the liquid to your hair as a rinse, leaving it on your hair for about 30 minutes. Then shampoo and apply conditioner to your hair as usual, and towel dry.

Using Mustard Seed Oil to Darken Hair

Mustard seed oil is another natural method for darkening your hair naturally. Simply rub mustard seed oil into your hair and leave it on overnight. Wash and rinse out in the morning. Doing this regularly will gradually darken your hair without damaging it and there is no odor once it is washed out.

Sage as a Natural Way to Darken Hair

The natural herb sage will gradually darken your hair if its repeated once or twice a week. Place a cup of sage into a pot of boiling water. Simmer for several hours and then strain and cool the liquid.

When cool apply the liquid to your hair and leave on for 30-45 minutes. Wash and towel dry your hair.
